Beartooth Campgrounds

Five campgrounds cluster around the foot of the mountains at 6800’ elevation along the Main Fork of Rock Creek and are typically open in mid-May. The boundary for the Absarokee-Beartooth Wilderness area is 3-4 miles to the southwest. ATVers can take the Hell-Roaring Road (FS Rd 2004) to the Hell-Roaring Plateau (10,000’), a seven-mile tortuous dirt road to the edge of the Wilderness. Hiking trails start at Parkside Campground and several nearby trail heads.

Two campgrounds hug the banks of the West Fork of Rock Creek located 7 miles west of Red Lodge. More remote and quieter than the Main Fork campgrounds, these spacious camps offer numerous trails into the Absarokee-Beartooth Wilderness to high alpine lakes and streams. Fishing is generous on the West Fork of Rock Creek and the handicapped accessible Wild Bill Lake. All camps provide pit toilets, garbage service, large tables, fire rings with firewood available for purchase, and drinking water from hand pumps.
