Fishing in the Beartooth Mountains

There is a wild and wonderful adventure for every fisherman who visits the Beartooth Scenic Highway. Hike to a high mountain lake, fish a pristine, cold tumbling mountain river, catch an elusive Yellowstone cutthroat trout, cast a lure into a clear mountain pool, practice casting while surrounded by granite peaks reaching 12,000 feet in elevation – the Beartooth Scenic Highway allows access to truly wild waters.

At the eastern end of the road close to Red Lodge, Montana anglers find unlimited fishing in the Rock Creek Drainage. Featuring 47 fishable lakes and several fishable steams and creeks the Rock Creek Drainage is a fisherman’s paradise. Contact the Custer National Forest – Beartooth Ranger District for detailed fishing information, and a list of campgrounds and picnic areas.

Close to Cooke City, Montana the upper Clark’s Fork of the Yellowstone River begins it journey south into Wyoming close to the Wyoming/Montana border at the western end of the Beartooth Scenic Highway. A favorite of fly fishermen, the river is easily accessible from several large pullouts along the route. This Clark’s Fork area of the Beartooth All-American Road is also home to over 400 lakes, most located within the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness Area. From Cooke City anglers can access lakes via jeep/ATV trails and area hiking trails.

    Fly Fishing Only Adventures:

    Website | 406.425.1761

Guided trips are available on the Stillwater and Yellowstone Rivers. Most of my days are float trips, as that gives us the best access to good water. Each day on the river can be different, some days we are wading in ankle deep water casting dry flies at rising fish in the riffles. Other days we are casting streamers out of the boat and stripping them off the banks. Some days we do both with a little nymph fishing mixed in. I usually let the conditions and the fish dictate where and how we fish. If you have a preference of which river to fish or technique to work on I can usually accommodate your wishes.

I can accommodate larger groups. I never send out more than two anglers per guide as I feel it does not provide a quality experience. If you have a big group give me a call and we can make the arrangements for a fun day on the water.

All Montana Trout Scout guided trips include everything you need except a license and personal items such as hat, sunglasses, etc.

We encourage catch and release and pride ourselves in practicing responsible fishing ethics.

We take pride in providing our clientele with a total quality outdoor experience. From our knowledge of local birds, wildlife, vegetation, history, and the area's original native inhabitants, we know the lay of the land. In the course of our time on the river, we will be traveling the same route and viewing the same terrain which the Lewis and Clark Expedition first saw in 1806. We are glad to share our knowledge of the Corps of Discovery's travels through South Central Montana.

    Angling Destinations:

    Website | 800.211.8530

There is a very good reason why Angling Destinations is headquartered in Wyoming just a stone's throw from Montana's Bighorn River Valley. For after all the bonefish trips to the Bahamas and after pursuing salmon in Alaska, trevally in the Seychelles, tarpon in Belize and permit in Mexico, we still love to see the subtle rise of a large rainbow to a small mayfly or the slashing gulp of a big brown to a grasshopper in the halcyon days of late summer. We never grow tired of trout fishing and understand well the passion that troutophiles have for their sport. And we can easily understand why most anglers consider the American West and especially the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho to be on a par with the world's best trout fishing destinations including Chile, New Zealand and Alaska.

But when planning a trip to our Rocky Mountain West, it can be a difficult and confusing process to sort through all the lodges each claiming to have the best water, the best guides and the best meals and lodging. We can help you sift through this maze of opportunities and eliminate your confusion. Based on our years of experience, we are confident we can get you to the right spot at the right time. We'll help you to make the best decision based on your specific fishing, travel, time and budget objectives.
